HELENA—Gov. Greg Gianforte has named Larry Flynn director of the Montana Department of Transportation, elevating a longtime agency official who has spent more than three decades working for the department.

Flynn replaces outgoing Director Chris Dorrington and takes over one of Montana’s largest state agencies, with more than 2,000 employees and an annual budget of about $1 billion.

“Larry Flynn is the right leader to continue the positive progress we’ve seen at MDT under Director Dorrington’s leadership,” Gianforte said.

Flynn has served as MDT’s deputy director since 2023, helping oversee the department’s operations, finances and policy development.

Before becoming deputy director, Flynn spent 16 years as the agency’s chief financial officer and administrator of its Administration Division, where he oversaw accounting, budgeting and other department functions.

“I am honored by the opportunity to lead the Montana Department of Transportation, a place I’ve dedicated my life to,” Flynn said. “Together, we will continue to invest in our roads and bridges, improve road safety, and deliver top notch customer service to Montanans across our state.”

Flynn is a graduate of Montana State University, where he earned a degree in business management.
